The PK22 Lounge chair was first introduced in 1956 and it brought Kjaerholm into the forefront of furniture design. The chair was an immediate success, both critically, (winning the Grand Prix at the 1957 Xi Triennale di Milano) and commercially (sales were strong enough to provide funds for subsequent designs.) The chair also largely contributed to Kjaerholm winning the Lunning Prise, Scandinavian"s most prestigious award for design and applied art in 1958. The PK22 lounge chair consists of a spring steel structure with one pair of legs, one pair of crossbars and one pair of side frames. Using brushed-satin, 304 stainless steel, the frames are joined with machine screws and covered with either 2mm thick leather or woven rattan cane. The design is timeless, however, and a cane version of this chair is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Rohssko Museum in Gothenborg, Sweden.

Our version of this chair is authentic in all respects, from the dimensions, to the use of stainless steel snaps for securing the leather, to precision of the fasteners. We offer our chair in many leather colors, except cane. We reinforce the leather by sandwiching a piece of canvas between the top and bottom leather panels. The PK22 is a delight to sit in, albeit it is a low seating height.

For this product, Modern Classics Furniture offers three levels of Top-Grain Italian Leathers (L1-Standard, L2-Premium and L5-Distressed). Each of the these groupings feature:
  • Top-grain Italian leather from Grade A hides
  • Semi aniline-dyed (standard) and 100% aniline-dyed (premium)
  • Made at Italian tanneries and sent to our factory
  • Have a UV and Moisture Guard built into the non-toxic vegetable dyes
  • Are not split hides or bonded leather
We are happy to mail you a physical piece of leather so you can hold it in your hands.

Our Standard Leathers (denoted with the prefix L1) are top-grain, aniline-dyed, and then color corrected with a slight embossing to create a more uniform grain pattern. Our Premium leathers (denoted with the prefix L2) are also top-grain, aniline-dyed but have a softer feel to them and much of the hides natural grain patterns are retained. Our Distressed Leathers (denoted with the prefix L5) are also top-grain, aniline-dyed but have a distressed look to them. L5 leathers will show rubbings and have a more waxy feel. All our leathers are considered equally durable and are ideal for home or commercial use. To read more about leather, read our A Guide to Understanding Upholstery Leather: A Primer.
