Borge Mogensen Furniture

Borge Mogensen (1914-1972) Danish designer Borge Mogensen began his education at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen from 1936 to 1938, and then continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts until 1941. For a few years he was an assistant to Kaare Klint, the well known professor at the Academy who laid the groundwork for a generation of designers. In 1950, he opened his own design firm where he designed furniture for Soborg Mobelfabrik, Fredericia Furniture and Karl Andersson & Sons. His many honors included the Eckersberg Medal in 1950, Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Annual Prize in 1958 and the Danish Furniture Prize in 1971.

Borge Mogensen’s designs were inspired by historical furniture pieces by the Shakers and the Chinese, and by Spanish forms. His design philosophy was to create furniture that was able to meet the needs of the average practical family. He designed furniture for every room of the home, taking into consideration the person who would be using the furniture. Mogensen was a prolific designer of wood furniture, but had limited designs of case goods. Thus for now, we decided to include only the most popular and iconic pieces from his large body of work.
