In the late 1960's, Kjaerholm created his first cantilevered lounge chair. While this style of chair was actually invented in the 1920s by Marcel Breuer using steel tubes and was further refined by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich in their BRNO chair, Kjaerholm was determined to surpass those standards. For the PK20 seat and back, Kjaerholm used a pair of steel side frames and fitted leather slipcover to provide a suspended seating surface. The base of the PK20 is a welded spring steel structure that combines a pair of cantilevered legs with a steel crossbar that supports the side frames and joins the legs. Where the crossbar meets each leg, the ends are curved up and attach to the side frames. This curve is meant to replicate the shape of the cantilevered legs. The crossbar is also curved to slay the side frames and cause them to pitch to either side of the chair. Kjaerholm's goal was to create a state of equilibrium in which the tension of the side frames was countered by compression of the leather seat covering. The leather slipcover is composed of multiple leather strips sewn into tubes, overlapped and sewn together to give the seat cover a ribbed look. The sewing of the leather strips into a tube, produces a ribbed diaphragm of enormous strength. The force of the splayed side frames keth the leather under continuous tension that was greather that the pressure exerted by the the sitter's weight.
Our Kjaerholm PK20 Cantilevered Lounge Chair is accurate to the original design. In our version, we use brushed-satin stainless steel for all the chair frame base and sides. Leather is sewn into tubes and stretched over the frame. We also include a bolster pillow that attaches with a leather belt and buckle. This chair is very comfortable, with the suspension coming from both the leather and the spring in the steel.Features:
